Student Works Recreating Realism and Romanticism (2021-2022)
Professional Development A lifetime of learning has provided me with an opportunity to share my experiences with my students. Every experience has the potential to guide students to better success in the future, and my part in that journey is critical to that outcome. My hope is to participate in at least one professional development program every year, so that I can bring the knowledge gained back to the classroom.
National History Day is a year-long academic program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for 6th- to 12th-grade students. Students participate in NHD programs by researching topics provided at the national level, then working with other students to present their results. The experience culminates in a series of contests at the local and affiliate levels and an annual national competition in the nation's capital in June.
The Stanford History Education Group (AKA SHEG) is an award-winning research and development group that comprises Stanford faculty, staff, graduate students, post-docs, and visiting scholars. SHEG seeks to improve education by conducting research, working with school districts, and reaching directly into classrooms with free materials for teachers and students. I use SHEG when I want to use peer reviewed lessons without having to design them myself, or when I am looking for something a little more challenging for students. The lessons are fully self contained with handouts, research links, resources and teacher materials.
I thought I understood what Equity in education meant, but I didn't know what I didn't know until I took the MILO program. Milo was an amazing educational experience. Understanding the importance of equity in education really helped me understand the things that our students go through on a daily basis, and how their environment shapes their opportunities. This program should be a requirement for every new teacher. The section on courageous conversation alone has changed how I discuss difficult topics with students. The program is truly inspirational!
